Το σωματίδιο εκείνο που ευθύνεται για τη «Μεγάλη Έκρηξη» και την εμπειρία του σύμπαντος ισχυρίζονται ότι ανακάλυψαν οι επιστήμονες , κατά τη διάρκεια των πρόσφατων πειραμάτων τους.

Συγκεκριμένα, ένα άγνωστο, μέχρι σήμερα, υποατομικό σωματίδιο πιθανόν να εντοπίστηκε στον αμερικανικό επιταχυντή Tevatron του Εργαστηρίου Fermilab, έξω από το Σικάγο, ενώ, όπως υποστηρίζουν μερικοί επιστήμονες, ίσως επιβεβαιωθεί και η ύπαρξη μιας νέας δύναμης στη φύση.

Να σημειωθεί ότι η λειτουργία του αμερικανικού επιταχυντή, του βασικού ανταγωνιστή του μεγάλου επιταχυντή αδρονίων (LHC) στο CERN, πρόκειται να σταματήσει μέχρι το φθινόπωρο του 2011, λόγω έλλειψης χρημάτων.

Για την ανακάλυψη όμως, ο θεωρητικός φυσικός Κρίστοφερ Χιλ του Fermilab δήλωσε πως «αν αποδειχτεί πραγματική, πρόκειται για τη σημαντικότερη ανακάλυψη στη Φυσική εδώ και μισό αιώνα».

Μια πιθανή εξήγηση για την παρατηρούμενη «ανωμαλία» στα δεδομένα των παρατηρήσεων είναι ότι αποτελεί ένδειξη για μια νέα και απροσδόκητη εκδοχή του «μποζονίου του Χιγκς», το οποίο αναζητείται εναγωνίως και από τον επιταχυντή του CERN.

Πρόκειται για ένα, μέχρι στιγμής, υποθετικό σωματίδιο, που προσδίδει μάζα στα άλλα υποατομικά σωματίδια και καθιστά συνεκτικό το «Καθιερωμένο Μοντέλο» της φυσικής στοιχειωδών σωματιδίων.
Μια εναλλακτική ερμηνεία είναι ότι εντοπίστηκε μια νέα φυσική δύναμη, πέρα από τον ηλεκτρομαγνητισμό, τη βαρύτητα, την ισχυρή και την ασθενή πυρηνική δύναμη.

Ο φυσικός Τζιοβάνι Πούντσι, εκπρόσωπος του Fermilab, ανακοίνωσε ότι η διεθνής επιστημονική ομάδα του αμερικανικού επιταχυντή «νιώθει μεγάλη έξαψη από τις διαγραφόμενες πιθανότητες, αλλά, ταυτόχρονα, παραμένει επιφυλακτική, επειδή θα μπορούσε να είναι κάτι τόσο σημαντικό, που καταντά τρομακτικό, γι’ αυτό σκεφτόμαστε όλες τις πιθανές εναλλακτικές εξηγήσεις».

Άλλοι φυσικοί, εκτός του Fermilab, που επίσης έχουν δει τα «ανώμαλα» δεδομένα, καθώς αυτά συζητιούνται στους κύκλους των φυσικών εδώ και λίγους μήνες, δήλωσαν ότι αντιμετωπίζουν το όλο ζήτημα με ένα μείγμα δέους και σκεπτικισμού.

«Αν ισχύει, είναι κάτι πολύ μεγάλο» δήλωσε ο θεωρητικός φυσικός του πανεπιστημίου της Νέας Υόρκης Νιλ Γουάινερ, ενώ η φυσικός του Χάρβαρντ Λίζα Ράνταλ είπε ότι πρόκειται για «σίγουρα ενδιαφέρον, αν είναι πραγματικό».

Από την άλλη, ο φυσικός Νίμα Αρκάνι-Χαμέντ, του Ινστιτούτου Προωθημένων Μελετών του Πανεπιστημίου Πρίνστον, δήλωσε ότι δεν έχει πειστεί από τα στοιχεία, τα οποία χαρακτήρισε στατιστικό «τέχνημα» του τρόπου παρουσίασής τους.

Αν όμως, πρόσθεσε, υπάρχει κάποια πραγματικότητα σε αυτές τις «ανωμαλίες», τότε δεν θα αργήσει ο πολύς ισχυρότερος επιταχυντής του CERN να τις επιβεβαιώσει.

Οι επιστήμονες του Fermilab, από την πλευρά τους, εκτιμούν ότι υπάρχει πολύ μικρή πιθανότητα (λιγότερο από 0,25%) η «ανωμαλία» να είναι στατιστικό σφάλμα.
